Birthday week!

Taken on Saturday.
I know a lot of people invest time into planning their outfits for their birthday party/outing/dinner. Usually, I do too. But since I've been in such a clothing funk, the appeal of looking special for my ~day~ didn't appeal to me. However, my two bday celebrations (one on Saturday and one on my actual birthday this past Wednesday) were great and full of wonderful friends. So at least I have that. No photos from my outfit for Saturday (except the one photo above with my pretty Princess margarita), but I wore these two outfits on my actual birth day. Like I said, fickle!

Outfit 1, Daytime where:
1. A lady gave me a washing machine that she accidentally paid for so I got to do one load for free!;
2. I was able to get the handyman/contractor in my building to help put up some shelves since I didn't have the equipment to properly and safely do it myself!;
3. I got a free scoop of ice cream, a candle, and a lovely rendition of "Happy Birthday" by the great dudes over at Wafels and Dinges.

Outfit details: Sweater: Gap | skirt: F21 | loafers: St. John's Bay | necklace: bday gift from Cecily and Anam via Little Pancakes

Outfit 2, Nighttime where:
1. I had a delicious Japanese BBQ dinner with some of my favorite girl friends;
2. Said girl friends bought me a tooon of desserts at Chikalicious.

Outfit details: jean jacket: Rodarte x Target | dress: Cooperative via UO | socks: H&M | ankle boots: Sam Edelman

A week in the life of...Joyce

JOYCE (Austin, TX)
And last but not least in my "A Week in the Life Of" blog posts is Joyce! She lived in New York over the summer for a law internship/job and I could always call on her to get soup dumplings, yell at waiters, lounge in bed and watch Parks and Recreation, and gallivant around the Natural History Museum. Basically, she's like my soul mate (sorry Tim!) (although all the other ladies who have contributed have also been my soul mates. Who says you can only have one, right?). I'm counting down the months until she moves back here so we can relive the summer.

I'm excited that she contributed to my silly blog as she has so much on her plate (law school or whatever) so thank you and thanks to all my lovely friends who have contributed in the past months!! xx

I have recently descended from the world of business casual everyday to the messier plane of wear whatever the fuck you want to law school everyday. It's kind of hard. Sometimes I think about just going to school naked. JUST KIDDING EVERYONE HOLD ONTO YOUR PANTIES HERE WE GO.

Tim's family has made it easier for me to get dressed like a normal person (ok, not normal, who are we trying to fool here) by buying me some nice dresses for my birthday! Here is a nice black dress and another nice dress that is mostly black.

Look at this freaking dress. This is everything I could want in a dress, namely (1) lace (2) an open back and (3) CATS EVERYWHERE.

I told myself over the summer I would start wearing jewelry like a grown woman. It hasn't really worked out so far, but I bought myself some nice jewelry.

Things I have been obsessed with lately:
My cat and my shoes--Dolce Vita Lisas or Lizas or Lizards or something. Coincidentally, my cat is REALLY INTO SHOES (exhibit A: when I moved the shoes, he walked over and stood next to them. Normally I have to use coercion and approximately 23 cat treats to get him to sit still in a photograph). Whenever there are shoes that are not on a shelf, he drapes himself over them and falls asleep. A cat after my own heart.
Previous guest poster Tricia sold me these shoes and gosh I am just really into them.

My HAIR, which is PINK, and these stickers that my mom got me, which GLOW IN THE DARK.

Thanks for reading, everybody. I miss you, Vivian.

Spring and Autumn goal achieved!

How do girls wear sweaters with shorts without feeling like the top part of their body is boiling and the lower part of them freezing? I cannot answer this question but I did attempt to yesterday. It was humid yet 70 last night, which doesn't really make sense but a sweater and shorts don't make sense either. Do you get what I'm saying? Anyway. That's maybe an answer. I felt pretty okay in this, so maybe that's the winning combination?

Outfit details: sweater: Zara | button up underneath (oh, it's sleeveless, so that helps with heat right? Detective Vivian over here): F21 | scalloped shorts: H&M | necklace: via Brooklyn Flea | loafers: St. John's Bay

Embracing Autumn

You should be happy that I don't document my outfits daily or else you'd see this sweater about 3-4 times a week. It's skyrocketing in favorite sweater status, which probably means I'm on the hunt for more cozy, large, shapeless sweaters! Until then, I will love this and only this. Unfortunately, it does not photograph well. Alas!

Bonus sassy pose:

"Then I'll bring my bolo tie"

Remember how I changed four times in my last entry? Scratch that and make it five times. I changed at night into this ~ensemble to meet up with my friend Shazia to see Patrick Wolf at Le Poisson Rouge. I was pretty excited to see him again--the first time was in 2004, second in 2007--and he did not disappoint.

He played mostly from his newest album, Lupercalia, accompanied by a very talented gal who, among many instruments, played the violin. Patrick was charming and adorable, and stronger as a musician than ever before. It was truly a wonderful night.

The title of this entry refers to a text reply that Shazia sent after I texted to inform her that I was to be wearing a bow tie that night. Unfortunately, she did not actually show up in a bolo tie. That would have been magical. We did take advantage of the photo booth at LPR though!

My camera perches precariously on a stack of sweaters in one of my cupboards, so the photos are always a little off. Until I figure out a creative solution to take better outfit photos, my sincerest apologies!

Hating everything

Nothing really to say. I wore this on a lazy Sunday after changing four times because I just didn't know what to wear/hated everything in my closet. Do you get like that sometimes? I'm just so tired of all of my dresses and I have no idea why! Here I am mixing lace, chambray, and velvet because I can.

Some bits and pieces

1. I think I may have one more "Week in the Life of" entry for you but my friend is crazy busy and flying cross country on law-student business so it'll have to wait. Until then, you'll just have to get used to my face gracing this blog again.

1-b. Which leads me to my main point in this entry. You don't know how grateful and happy and wonderful I feel to have so many lovely ladies taking time ouf of their hectic life schedules to write a blog post for me. It's truly wonderful getting to see a little in their lives, and also for them to willingly share it on the Internet. Love all of them forever. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

2. I haven't done any Fashion Week updates yet like I've done in previous seasons. A part of me wants to continue doing it because it's fun and it's nice to have an archive of all of my favorite looks. However, I've just been so busy with grad school, work, catching up on reading/writing, trying to have a social life that I have been woefully behind on collections. Trying to catch up now feels like a very daunting task. Maybe I'll just do a very general recap when I have time? Who knows...

3. Here is a preview of my next outfit post, because this is like prime-time television, and you always need a sneak peek.

At the first sign of cold weather...

Break out my wool coat. Guys, it's ~cold~ in New York. Although I have already survived my first New York winter, for some reason, this drop in temperature has taken me by surprised. I'm not ready yet! I honestly have no idea what I want to wear. What are tights? What's thicker than a very light cardigan? So of course, I default to a shirt, shorts, tights and my trusty wool coat.

Every time I see this red coat hanging in my closet, I thank the vintage gods that I was bestowed with it. Dramatic? WHATEVA WHATEVA.

Outfit details: coat: vintage via Brooklyn Flea | Joy Division shirt: bday gift from Anam | silk shorts: PinkyOtto | brogues: Aldo | tights: Target

A week in the life of...Shazia

SHAZIA (New York, NY)

Like Cecily, I have known Shazia since the very awkward and embarrassing years of early high school. It was a relief, then, to know I already had a friend living in New York when I moved here last year. We always joke about how, when someone asks how New York is, and how much fun we should be having, that really, all we do is what we would've done back home. Snack at home while watching Titanic on TNT. And now, I leave it to Shazia to give us a glimpse of her New Yawkin' life (which, like I said, really just consists of lounging and good eats!).

Hello, internet! It’s going on three years since I’ve left Los Angeles for New York. Vivian and I agree that the move has been one of the most polarizing experiences in our lives so far. The city basically brings two definable, emotional states: happiness (brunch! art! brunch!) or stress (subway, “how do I walk all these groceries home, subway”, waiting, dis’ rent too damn high, waiting, subway). I never thought I’d say I left my heart somewhere (except in the ‘da club, obviously), but Los Angeles has never had to fight for mine. Even so, since New York has lured me into its concrete jungle, I will not rest until Vivian and I have eaten every croissant, beignet, pizza slice and Santino to make it to Bryant Park Fashion Week with Tim Gunn.

I think my clothing choices have reflected my views toward the city. Some days I feel that I dress better than others, some days I feel that idgaf, but every day I know that comfort is always key because no matter what, there will be lots walking involved. No matter what, nothing can beat a well-built pair of walking shoes and a comfy, fall cardigan. I finished my master’s in international politics in May and am currently work at a publishing house in midtown. We’ll see what the future brings. Until then, brunch!

#1: Cas day in the office requires a cas hands-in-my-pockets attitude, obvi!

Shirt: Zara, Trouser shorts: ConRags NYC (at Brooklyn Flea), Leggings: H&M, Necklace: UO
#2: Formal day in the office requires serious gesticulation a la~all hands on deck. Forceful conclusion!
Dress: H&M, Leggings: UO

#3 I had the Friday off on Labor Day weekend. I woke up and got a bechamel croissant sandwich at Balthazar and then watched an episode of Louie. Then I made plans to go to Dave & Buster's because I'm 12.

Cardigan: Whitney Lang (~vintage), Dress: Some thrift store

#2 Dress from Squaresville in Los Feliz, California, Loafer wedges from Aldo

#3 I think this picture is backwards. ~oh inverted world.

#4 This is an adorable bottle of chocolate milk. Also leftover strawberry pie I made with Vivian while we watched Tyler the Creator win Best New Artist at the VMA's. We have been friends for a while.

A week in the life of...Kensey

KENSEY (Montreal)

Kensey has one of those faces that you just never forget. It is timeless and classic yet unique, beautiful and adorable. I have admired Kensey for awhile now, from her eye for capturing beautiful moments on film to the way she wears her hair. I am really happy that she took time from her cross-country move sans most of her wardrobe and Internet to write an entry for me. Without further gushing, Kensey!

LinkI'm honoured to be selected to be one of the gals featured on Vivian's blog. I must admit though--I kind of procrastinated documenting any recent outfits because I've just moved to Montreal from the West coast and left most of my favourite clothings back home in a box waiting to be shipped my way. In the mean time I thought this was a perfect opportunity to spend some time thrifting, and make use of the items that I did bring with me. Summer is fading away into Autumn, and I'm looking forward to all the layers and wools and things I can smother myself in. I love summer for its long days, but I don't really enjoy dressing for it like I do the colder seasons. Here are some of the outfits I have been donning during this seasonal cusp of rains, humidity, unbearable heat, and cold winds.

I found these lederhosen for $10 a year ago, and I wear them as much as I can. Although it's best not to sit too long in them on a hot day if you want to avoid the "peeling sweaty legs from a leather couch" feeling.

This top is actually a dress I bought from an old lady at a yard sale. It fits like a hospital gown, which totally isn't in right now, so I like to wear it as a shirt instead.

And for when it gets chilly...

I borrow my roommate's big warm plaid jacket.

I probably own too many plaid shirts, but I just think they look so classic!

Again, this top is a dress that fit really awkwardly and so I cut it to fit as a shirt. I guess this is a thing I do now.

This is me at my fanciest! Skirt purchased from a yard sale and top from a great thrift store here called Renaissance!

I feel like a twelve year old when I wear this. Makes me wish I could climb some trees right now and listen to Weird Al and eat cheezies. I think that's all I really cared about when I was twelve.

These are the two bags I circulate between. Backpacks are good for two reasons. One, they hold a lot of stuff like sandwiches and other snacks. And two, I feel like they help my awful posture.

This might sound a bit weird, but while I was staying with my dad, I found a box of beard dye in the bathroom drawer. I am relatively beardless so I decided to try it out on my eyebrows to make them a bit more dramatic. It even comes with a little brush that makes it easy to apply, but please mind your eyeballs--it's probably not worth going blind over fierce brows.

And finally, during all these crazy summer storms that Montreal is notorious for, I've been curling up with East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I think it's probably on that list of books you should read before you die, and for good reason.
