A week in the life of...Emily

EMILY (Torrance, CA)
Emily was one of my first friends when I joined my college radio station, KUCI, in Irvine. We shared a love of everything Swedish, cardigans and sweaters, and cute Swedish boys wearing cardigans and sweaters. Her knowledge and interest in the most adorable indie-pop music rivals the most die-hard pop fan you know. I'm sorry, that's just fact. Another fact: girls from Torrance are the bee's knees! I should know...

And now, before my bragging gets too embarrassing for you dear reader, I leave it to my pal Emily to redeem this blog!

Hi there. I'm super pleased to contribute to this project. These days have been weird for me in that I have an abundance of free time and can basically do whatever I want. I am so not used to that. I work from home for a small transcription company that primarily focuses on academic transcription. I get to work at my own pace and depending on the workload, I may have an entire week free or an entire week holed up in my room. Luckily it's been manageable and I've been having a lot of fun. This hedonistic lifestyle gets tiring though, so I've also been thinking about returning to the affordable housing field. Business casual outfits may or may not have something to do with that.

As much as I enjoy getting dressed each day, I'm afraid I don't really know who's who or what's the haps in the fashion world today. And that's okay! That suits me fine. What is important to me is just looking put together and presentable. I'm not big on looks that are too out there (nothing wrong with out there, to each her own), and my belief is that "modest is hottest" when it comes to style. Unsurprisingly, my favorite article of clothing is the sweater.

Here are some things I wore in a week:

Monday

t-shirt: Stephen Steinbrink's Next New Sun tour / jean jacket: Gap / pants: H&M / sneakers: Asics

Easing into the week in comfort after a pretty potent weekend. Had a doctor's appointment in the morning, did some work in the afternoon, and then went to a totally cozy Irvine house show at night. Total relax.

Tuesday

blouse: thrifted / linen shorts: Gap / belt: from mom idk / loafers: grandma's (don't be grossed out, they skipped a generation)

I caught the Torrance Farmers Market in the morning and then spent the rest of the day hanging with an old friend whom I hadn't seen in months. We watched Midnight in Paris and the film was cute and all with the cameos, but I literally clutched my polyester-covered chest when Gad Elmaleh showed up on screen. I first saw him Hors de prix with Audrey Tatou and fell for the sometimesprettycreepylooking dreamboat. Anyway, the point of this story is that I scored some sweet things today. My friend gave me the cutest scarf (it has punctuation marks and letters and symbols and etc. on it!) and then I swung by Stein Mart on the way home and found a pair of shoes on sale. People often rip on Stein Mart, saying that it's a store for moms and old ladies. I say WHATEVER, that just leaves more stylish/borderline geriatric shoes for me.

shoes: Impo / scarf: second-hand gift!
Wednesday

dress: garaged sale'd / cardigan: thrifted / belt: idk from mom / sandals: Mootsies Tootsies

Met up for lunch with my brother today. It's always deceptively overcast in the mornings and then suddenly the sun races out from behind the clouds on its motorcycle, pops a flaming wheelie, and then laughs in my face while I'm forced to take off my sweater.

Thursday/Friday
Nothing to show for these days.Thursday and Friday were work days for me; this means I spent them sitting in front of my computer in boxers. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was transcribing interviews involving children while being pretty much pantsless. Updating your resume in your pajamas is always humbling as well. To my credit, I later forced myself into sweatpants (like that is any better) and out of the house to get some exercise.

Saturday

-shirt: Target / sweater: Karen Scott / pants: H&M / belt: that same one idk from mom / shoes: Impo / sweet-ass leather backpack that smells so good and is lovingly worn in: dad's from decades ago

Again with the "it is cool when I leave the house in the morning but then it jumps up 20 degrees" weather. I got to wear these new geriatric puppies out. I spent the day in LA running a couple of errands. I had been meaning to check out Wombleton Records in Highland Park for a while, but just never got around to it. Holy cow, I have seen the light. It's a tiny used record shop but their selection is amazing. So many gems. So, so many gems. I knew it was meant 2 be when the storekeeper (dreamily clad in all black) put on The Wake. I bought several records and then hurried home to get on a bus to go see Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Hollywood Bowl! My sweater came in handy at night.

Snacks. I never said I was sophisticated.

My Wombleton finds! I cried a little inside when I spotted that Marine Girls record.

Sunday

dress: garage sale'd / belt: that same one idk from mom / wedges: Etsy

I love the details on these wedges. The peep-toe level is enough to be playful, but not enough to actually peep a toe and be gross. Plus those stitches! That braiding along the bottom! Too cute.

I ate lunch at a little Szechuan restaurant and there was this one insanely spicy dish that was just like, 50% chili oil and Szechuan peppers. I very nearly spilled bright red chili oil all over this dress. And with that enthralling story, I end this post. Thanks for letting me share my week with you!

weathering the storm

jewelry hanging knobs

Although it's been slightly rainy here in my neighborhood, I don't think we've even seen the beginning of the hurricane. However, I did a bunch of errands early this morning in "preparation" and I'm already tired so I might just hole up in my room for the day (yes, I know it's only 2:30 pm).

wardrobe

My room is not completely set up yet (once I get something for my shoes and some more prints to go up on my ~gallery wall~ I swear I'll be finished!) but here are some little corners of the place.

Is it sweater weather yet?

So for some weird reason, New York was having almost fall-like weather Monday night. I got so excited that I decided to wear a sweater and trousers--my favorite Autumnal look--for a screening of "Senna" at Sunshine Cinema. I will take any weather below 70 as a chance to wear a sweater because before you know it, it'll be winter and I'll fist pump when the temperature gets above 20 degrees. Apologies, BTW. I still haven't found the perfect place to take photos yet and my room is still in an unpacking mess.

Recyling

I may or may not have worn a variation of this outfit a bajillion times in the past few weeks. I could say it's because most of my clothes are still packed away (as you can see in these photos, sadly true), the rain + humidity is making it hard to dress (true), but really it's just a darn comfortable outfit and I look instantly ~put-together~ in it.

Outfit details: top: H&M | shorts: Rag&Bone | loafers: St. John's Bay | necklace: via Brooklyn Flea Market | tote: God Help the Girl

Here is a bonus photo of me looking silly at karaoke in K-Town last night. You know you want to party with me.

A week in the life of...Tricia

TRICIA (Austin, TX)
Tricia is a girl after my own heart. She loves a lot of the same things I do: black and white photos of folk singers, cats, tote bags, the many emotions of Jon Hamm, loafers...not to mention, cats. She is also behind (along with Carly) one of my favorite zines/publishing collectives/blogs/all-around girly badassery Ventricular Projects. Full disclosure: we are also in a (future) girl-group twee band called The Best Bangs. I am delighted that she took some time out of her cross-country upheaval to write a fantastic little entry for me. Without blabbing on and on, I give the metaphorical floor to Tricia!

I'm a sentimental fool who feels a twinge of regret whenever I leave the house without at least one camera, so documenting my last week in Boston and my return to my home state of Texas was a pretty natural decision for me. It wasn't long before I started to notice that kitties were a unifying thread in the snaps I was taking, so I decided to follow my heart and let those little whiskered devils have their way. Live every week like it's cat week!
Striking a signature Vivian pose in a kitty-friendly outfit (Topshop skirt, Gap shirt, Zara tee, thrifted Bass loafers, and H&M sunglasses that I did not actually wear indoors but felt were integral to the outfit). Now, you might be wondering what makes this outfit worthy of inclusion in a cat post?
Well, the answer is that I built it around this fashionable feline pin that came with my copy of my very favorite publications, Chelsea Magazine.
It's not a Vivian and the Dream of Horses post without a cute tote bag, so here are a couple of mine! I have tons, but lately I'm all about my Fieldguided & thrifted cat bags.
Next up, all you need to get a perfect cat eye and more! Hello Kitty for Sephora eyeshadow and blush kit (which I use to fill in my naturally super light brows). Maybelline Full & Soft mascara (have been using this every day since high school--truly the best!), Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner for that swingin' sixties flair, and Revlon's Just Bitten lipstain for hot pink lips. Bonus points: if you don't have naturally perfect skin, Mario Badescu products (seen creepin' in the back) are lovely and Benefit Boi-ing is a super hardcore concealer.
I had a crazy busy week (what with moving and all), so making a gigantanormous thing of pasta salad at the beginning of it was a lifesaver. Cat-shaped pasta courtesy of my mom! Just throw together some chopped tomatoes, bell peppers, Italian dressing, black pepper, crushed red pepper, and parmesan cheese and you have a quick, delicious meal! I guess you don't need three kinds of pepper if you don't want, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I ended my week with a real, live cat! Specifically, a reunion with favorite feline in the world, Miss Sophie, who I think should be a fashion blogger because when I stopped taking pictures of her she actually started whining.

My Generation

In honor of finally getting Internet at the new apartment, here is a lovely editorial from September's issue of US Vogue, featuring Natalia Vodianova and Ian Curtis doppelganger (he is probably tired of that by now but WHATEVER) Sam Riley. It is shot by Mert & Marcus and styled by Grace Coddington.

There is also plenty of winged eyeliner, bouffant hair, slim-cut suits, and a great handful of '60s style references. Dreamy.

A week in the life of...Cecily

Cecily (Los Angeles, CA)

I am really pleased as punch to introduce the next installment of "A Week in the Life Of..." This entry comes from one of my nearest and dearest friends. We bonded over Radiohead and Coldplay (no regrets) in high school and have never looked back since. I miss her a ton now that I live in New York, but am really excited to have her grace my blog. Without further ado...

Greetings dear readers! When Vivian first asked me to participate in this project, I

enthusiastically accepted although I thought, “How in the world can I compare my 9-5 life with

her exciting NYC adventures?” I am old (well at least older than I’d like to admit) and my life

these days consist of work, sleep, and karaoke (no shame). But hey, as I haven’t updated my

own blog (coatlove.com) in literally forever, I have no excuse not to document a week of outfits.

I work full time at a comedy club in Los Angeles (not as glamorous as it sounds). Thankfully

the office is “business casual” which I interpret to mean “dress and heels,” which is pretty much

what I wear almost every day.

My current fashion obsessions include MIU MIU, Rag & Bone, peter pan collars (forever), and

Equipment blouses. Actually, chances are if Vivian’s ever blogged about it then I am INTO IT.

So here you are, a week’s worth of outfits:

Outfit 1

My typical work look

dress (Marc by Marc Jacobs), heels (Guess), necklace (gift)

Outfit 2

Similar look, complimented by my ~fashionable~ posing

dress (Zara), heels (Guess), same necklace, bag (co-lab by Christopher Kon)

Outfit 3

Yes, LA was cold enough that I needed a sweater

dress & cardigan (H&M), canvas wedges (Urban Outfitters), necklace (Forever 21)

Outfit 4

Weekend look!

shirt (Urban Outfitters), skirt (Forever 21), sandals (Swedish Hasbeens for H&M)

Outfit 5

I bought this blouse recently; I love the detail like the fabric covered buttons

blouse (Forever 21), jeans (Urban Outfitters), heels (Seychelles)

And in honor of my blog I never update, here are a few of my favorite outerwear pieces that I

own:

Left to right: APC, Free People, H&M, Opening Ceremony (thank you Ebay).

I also own an amazing Rag & Bone silk trench in black but failed to take a photo of it, oops. You can find it here.

A week in the life of...Carly

CARLY (soon-to-be Austin, Texas)

Like I said in my introduction post, I'm really excited to be able to do such a fun little project for my blog. It keeps things interesting and I get to show off my awesome friends to you, my dear readers (yes, all ten of you)! It's kind of great to see how, even though a lot of my friends and I have similar style aesthetics, we totally appropriate them differently in real life. I may own the same dress as one girl, but the way we both style it is truly our own.

Anyway, to start off this month-long plus "A Week in the Life of" project is none other than Carly, one half of both Ventricular Projects and FYWA (F Yeah Women Artists). You can also find her here. Without further ado, I turn it over to Carly...

As much as I love the idea of summer, it never pans out to be that enjoyable. Living in the south means unbearable humidity every day and severe wardrobe limitations. On my days off from work, I just sort of give up and throw on a pair of shorts and tank, or a sundress, along with a pair of sandals and look forward to October (or whenever it starts to finally cool off). I'm embarrassed to admit I've already purchased three sweaters this month in anticipation for fall (my favorite season) but lately I've been a bit better on trying to stick to hot weather purchases instead (Vivian helped talk me out of a sweater the other day in lieu of a more lightweight blouse).

Recent purchases

(No. 6 silk dress, Rachel Comey tank, thrifted sweater)

The No. 6 dress and Rachel Comey tank were both on extreme sale and I wasn't able to resist (I really hate this time of year for all the 75% off online boutique sales, I lose all self-control). The sweater was a great thrifting find from early July, I'm always scouting for them in the summer when no one else is looking. The selection is usually limited so there's more room for summery clothes, but there's always a few fantastic ones tucked away in the racks.

Here's a few of my more recent favorite things:

(Arrow Stud Earrings from Datter (aka Kaye Blegvad) and Lavender Olive Oil Soap from 12th Avenue.)

Favorite sandals

I fell in love with these sandals when they first came out but couldn't justify the price tag. Luckily, I was able to find them on sale for 50% off a few weeks back and haven't been able to take them off my feet! (which are now dyed red from the suede).

Favorite sundress
I found this A.P.C. Madras sundress for 50% off at the Steven Alan outpost while shopping with Tricia in New York. The best part of the dress is it has pockets! The store is extremely small but everything is super cute and most of the merchandise is current but marked down heavily. Definitely check it out if you have the chance. It's air conditioned!

Favorite Hair Style

I have super thick and wavy hair and as soon as it comes in contact with humidity, it turns into a huge sweaty tangled mess so it's pretty much always up in the summer. I go back and forth between a side bun and braids, I just want it out of my face and off my body.
