natural history

As promised, a post about my trip to the American Natural History Museum. I had been there almost a year ago, but since Joyce had never been and I love natural history (museums), I was more than happy to go with her. There were a lot of screaming kids, a lot of strollers rolling over my feet, and one or two very passive-aggressive bro-y dads but with so many dino bones, I couldn't stay mad.

Where we're going, we don't need any roads

Friday was particularly steamy and hot but it didn't stop me from having a very full day. Hilary and I met up for lunch at MESA Grill (thanks to restaurant week!) and then went to the New York Aquarium. I had wanted to go for awhile now (aquariums and natural history museums--of which the latter will be in my next post, actually!--are kind of my jam) and since Fridays are "pay what you will," it was kind of a no-brainer. So an hour subway ride and we were there! The walruses were not out that day but jellyfish, the one "exhibit" I love at any aquarium, were wonderful.

Then, it was off to the Intrepid to a free screening of one of my favorite movies, Back to the Future. As always, seeing Mary McFly skateboarding and beating up Biff and playing "Johnny B. Goode" was a treat. Especially when seeing it with friends. A good Friday for sure.

Simple Sunday

Ate lots of good food this weekend, including a chicken dinner at Momofuku. Oh man, 2 3/4 chicken fried two ways--who can say no?

In "style" news, I've been forcing myself to only buy cotton/silk/other natural fiber clothing just because it's a waste for me to buy anything polyester or the like for a New York summer. I had tried on an adorable red and white striped wiggle dress at Zara but upon learning that it was 100% polyester, ended up finding this 100% cotton gingham dress reminiscent of something I would have picked up at A.P.C. or Steven Alan if I had the money. Again, who could say no?

Closer

Have you ever had one of those days where you're tired of wearing shorts/skirts/dresses and just want to wear some damn pants? No? Just me? Alright. Well, I had one of those days last week. Thunderstorms and humidity be damned! Actually, it was alright...until I was down in the subway. Then it was bad news bears. But whateva, pants sometimes forever.

I wore this outfit (sans weird poses, I apologize!) to meet up with Shazia and Ellie for some fried chicken and then an unsuccessful attempt at hanging out in Eataly's Birreria. By unsuccessful, I meant I was a bit disappointed. Sure, I figured it would be bougie, but I also didn't realize there is no seating if you're not also dining. Laaaame.

Bring me the workhorse

Got caught in a sudden rainstorm after work on Thursday. Oh New York summers, what don't you do? Of course, I was all dry by the time I got off the subway because apparently the power was out in Brooklyn and therefore I sat on the 5 for thirty minutes? Yes, that happened. Of course, the night was salvaged when I met up with H and we sat outdoors in Castle Clinton and saw My Brightest Diamond perform (for free, mind you!) beautifully. Afterwards, we may or may not have gorged on Korean fried chicken. It was beautiful, in another way.

I wish I wasn't lazy and took a photo of the back of the skirt because it has this cute tie-situation. OH WELL.

Office wear

Despite working in an office (albeit one for an academic journal), I rarely explore the world of office wear. Probably because I never want to work in a REAL office and mostly because I don't really own much business casual clothes. I think, aside from my interview outfit, this is the most "formal" I have looked in the two months I've worked there. Weird.

Although I wore this top buttoned all the way up (for complete collar-ness), it got way too damn hot waiting for the subway home --> walking home that I had to unbutton a few. And then I took these photos and forgot. So I guess just imagine the Peter Pan collar and don't mistake it for my hair--which is what I did when I did a quick glance in the mirror!

A case of the Tuesdays

Tuesdays feel like Mondays when you come off of a glorious 3-day holiday weekend. I decided to keep the patriotic feel going by wearing two of the three colors on our glorious flag. And look Ma, less hair! It's already proven useful while waiting underground for the subway when the temperature is at least 10 degrees warmer and the humidity 100%.

Anything Goes

Outfit details: lace dress: MNG x JCPenney | sandals: Salt Water sandals
This will be my last outfit post with long(er) hair. I wore this lace dress to see "Anything Goes" on Broadway with J and her parents (thanks for inviting me!). The music, dancing, and sets were all fantastic.

Although I've lived in New York for almost a year now (where did the time go, seriously?), I had never seen a musical on Broadway until last Friday. To get a taste at the talent that I got to witness, peep this video below; a truncated version performed at the Tony Awards.

Girls on Top

V 71 Summer 2011
A little eye candy to ease you back into the weekend. I hope yours was great--Independence Day or not. I spent mine eating WAY too much food, getting a hair cut (it's SHORT, ya'll!), and attending two really fun parties. I promise more outfit posts soon. But for now, here is Tao Okamoto, Fei Fei Sun, Liu Wen, and Shu Pei for you, courtesy of V magazine issue 71, Summer 2011. Swoon.

she's cheer captain and i'm on the bleachers

My girl friends back home decided to hold a 'GIRLS ONLY' slumber party this past weekend. Since I live 3,000 miles away, I sadly was not able to be there and get drunk/enjoy impromptu dance parties/be cute with them.

Lo and behold I check Facebook the next day and guess what I found? THE MOST adorable cover of T. Swizzle's "You Belong with Me" (don't hate; it's an awesomely catchy song), complete with swings, bubbles, dancing, and beautiful California weather. I don't know what I did to deserve such great friends but I feel truly loved. Thank you thank you Emily, Briana, Katie, Andi, Rebecca, Erin, Cassie and Amanda, who videotaped it!

Fashion inspo

As I try to get the motivation to document my outfits again, here is another post of fashion/personal style inspiration that I have saved to my Tumblr (follow if you're not already) over the past few weeks. A happy Fourth of July weekend to you all, dear readers! (and a Happy Canada Day too, I guess...?)
